Bending Spoons' Plan to Lay Off 75% of WeTransfer Staff After Acquisition

Italian app company Bending Spoons, the owner of Evernote and Meetup, is reportedly planning to lay off 75% of the staff at file transfer service WeTransfer following its acquisition of the Dutch company in July. The exact amount of the acquisition remains undisclosed.

According to reports, Bending Spoons has confirmed its intention to downsize WeTransfer's workforce and will inform the affected employees after complying with local layoff regulations in various countries. It has been reported that WeTransfer currently employs over 350 individuals.

Bending Spoons CEO Luca Ferrari explained that the company typically evaluates the organization it acquires to determine the best future direction, with a goal of long-term operation. He emphasized the importance of aligning the existing state of the business with its envisioned future, which often involves significant changes to the organization. Despite the difficulty of such decisions, Ferrari stated their readiness to take necessary actions to ensure the company's success.

In the case of WeTransfer, Ferrari mentioned the goal of establishing a smaller, more focused team to enhance the company's prospects for sustained success. While the app has introduced new features post-acquisition, such as the ability to extend link expiration dates, the long-term product roadmap remains undisclosed by Bending Spoons or WeTransfer.

The layoffs are consistent with Bending Spoons' strategy of trimming employee counts post-acquisition to improve operational efficiency. Previous instances include significant workforce reductions at Evernote and Filmic, with Meetup also experiencing job cuts after being acquired. In a recent development, Bending Spoons secured $155 million in equity financing from a mix of new and existing investors in February.
